Collection: Ceramics

Word of Greek origin: keramos means "clay". The generic term ceramic refers to all objects made from clay that have undergone an irreversible physicochemical transformation during firing at more or less high temperature.

Ceramics is the first “art of fire” to appear, before glass and metal work, at the end of prehistoric times, in the Neolithic period. Ceramic is not only a cultural marker in most societies but also the most abundant material that man has created.

History of the raku ware

The raku draws its origins from 16th century Japan. It occupies an important place in tea ceremonies. The raku technique was invented by Sen No Rikyu, a Japanese tea master and prominent figure of the wabi style. He created this type of ceramic with the help of the craftsman Raku Chōjirō who developed this very particular firing and smoking technique. Raku ceramics carry a very strong spiritual and aesthetic dimension characterized by simplicity, beauty and chance.

Process of the raku firing

I model all of my pieces entirely by hand. A first firing is done at low temperature. The temperature rose very slowly to 1000 ° C. It is then necessary to wait for the oven to cool down slowly in order to be able to remove the pieces to room temperature. I then proceed to the enamelling step during which I decide whether or not to color my pieces. I then proceed to the second firing, called raku firing: the oven is raised very quickly between 960 °C and 1000 °C. The oven is opened at this temperature and the parts are taken out using a large pliers. This is when the thermal shock occurs and the enamel shrinks.
